Fenopolis - Part 4

Painting

First up? The black tiles...

If you are going to invest in expensive terrain like this, you owe it to yourself to use an airbrush.

I'm using Vallejo Air for the paints.

The process for the basic street tiles is:
  1. Remove street marking masks only
  2. Airbrush - Grey Primer &/or White Primer
  3. Airbrush - White
  4. Remask white stripes w/ masking tape
  5. Airbrush - Yellow
  6. Remove masking tape before it damages stripes
  7. Paint Black airbrush paint by brush into slab edges
  8. Remask all street markings w/ paper
  9. Remove some building slab area masks
  10. Airbrush - White primer
  11. Remove more of the building slab area masks
  12. Airbrush - Grey primer
  13. Remove the last of the building slab masks
  14. Airbrush - Grey
  15. Remove paper masks
  16. Paint Black airbrush paint by brush into remaining exposed lines
  17. Remove & store masks for street markings (to use with bases)
The centerpiece tile is slightly different.  It changes after step 6.

Sounds worse than it is... it's mostly common sense.

Step 1:

Steps 2-3:

Steps 4-5:

Steps 6-7:

Steps 7 & 16 are because the laser engraved lines are white and airbrush paint just makes it worse.  I do this stage before removing the masks to keep just the lines painted.  I use airbrush paint because it is thinner without being an ink.

Steps 8-10:

The reason to do the building slabs in stages is to add variety to the final grey tone and allow for defined edges.  The same technique will be used with the sidewalks.

At this point, I'm going to take a break and post this.

I will continue with steps 11-17 in the next post.
